St. Anthony Punches Playoff Ticket
Story by J.J. Fiddler
The St. Anthony Saints locked up a playoff spot on Halloween night, and the key was a steady ground attack. Quarterback Lamont Rowe and running back John Graves combined for 289 yards on the ground and all three Saints touchdowns in a victory over the visiting St. Monica Mariners, 21-7.
St. Anthony (5-3, 4-2) had some trouble throwing the ball, but when you’re averaging five yards a carry, the passing game takes a back seat. On the second drive of the game, the Saints showcased their running game and Graves capped the 67 yard, 10 play drive with an eight yard touchdown run up the middle.
Defensively, linebacker Mika Yandall and the young St. Anthony unit keyed on St. Monica workhorse running back Hector Santiesteban. The senior carried the ball 28 times for 150 yards, but that was all the Mariner offense could do, and multiple drives stalled near midfield.
After halftime, Rowe, who also plays safety, picked off a pass and scored on the ensuing drive from 9 yards out.
With a little bit of help, the Saints have an outside shot at winning league. And with the playoff spot sured up, St. Anthony has two weeks to maintain this momentum for the postseason.
