St. Anthony High School Congratulates Commended Students in the 2015 National Merit Scholarship Program

A Letter of Commendation from the school and National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC), which conducts the program, was presented by the principal to these scholastically talented students.

We are so proud of Nicholas and Sarah, not just for this wonderful accomplishment, but also for their amazing personal character and integrity throughout the St. Anthony High School community,” stated Mike Schabert, Principal of St. Anthony High School.

According to NMSC, “About 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise.  Commended Students are placed among the top five percent of more than 1.5 million students who entered the 2015 competition by taking the 2013 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®).”

A spokesperson from NMSC continues, saying “The young men and women being named Commended Students have demonstrated outstanding potential for academic success.  These students represent a valuable national resource; recognizing their accomplishments, as well as the key role their schools play in their academic development, is vital to the advancement of educational excellence in our nation.  We hope that this recognition will help broaden their education opportunities and encourage them as they continue their pursuit of academic success.”

Commended Students Sarah Baldwin and Nicholas Negrete are among many high-achieving scholars attending St. Anthony High School, an “environment for academic excellence” and Long Beach’s only Catholic high school since its founding in 1920,  with 52% of the student body earning honor roll status last semester and, for the past five years, 100% of the graduates going on to attend college or to proudly serve our military. Among these graduates, over 70% are attending four-year colleges or universities this school year.
