Last Saturday, November 14th, Long Beach St. Anthony High School's Academic Decathlon Team travelled to San Pedro's Mary Star of the Sea for a unique head-to-head scrimmage. Traditionally, the teams compete in only one meet - the Southern California Private Schools Academic Decathlon in February. Bringing the two schools together was a collaborative effort between the two coaches, St. Anthony's Edgar Salmingo and Mary Star's John Erb, in order to create more events and activities for the students to participate in. With this year's theme being the French Revolution, the teams had events based on this theme in four subjects, Art, Music, Language/Literature, and a surprise subject, the French Revolution (Super Quiz).
After 3 hours of test-taking, St. Anthony came out on top of each event, taking home golds in all four subjects. Junior Brittany Rodriguez won the best overall medal with 93 points, 20 more than the second place finisher. She had three of the gold medals, besting everyone in Art, Music, and Language/Literature. Senior Dolan Kay took the final gold in the last event, Super Quiz, which was on the French Revolution. Freshmen Miguel Eamiguel and Aldrin Lupisan also medaled, tying for bronze medals in the Art competition. Despite the success of these students, Mary Star won the team competition, 532-380.
This was the first of three head-to-head matchups against Mary Star this year, and both schools will compete in the regional Private Schools Competition on January 30 and February 6.
